even monkeys fall out of trees
by nina s. ragle

This beautifully illustrated book contains 287 intriguing verbal traditions for all to share. These proverbs are insights into the cultural, social and business life of Japan. They reveal a nation's character in a concise, amusing and witty style. Each proverb is written in kanji, Romanized Japanese and English. The author explores the historical significance of each proverb and in many cases demonstrates how John Y. Naka, known as "Shogun of American Bonsai," uses the proverb to suggest the philosophical aspects of Japanese art forms.

Naka-san's customized versions of the traditional proverbs have become known as "Nakaisms." Amaze your friends, learn Nakanese! Now that you have eaten the poison, you may as well eat the dish!

In addition, John Naka has drawn nine humorous illustrations created exclusively for this book.
